Been mostly working on commissions, but in the evening I like to sketch - and people said they would like to see more sketches, so I scanned a few pages from my sketchbook!
I love to do studies, and I want to do a whole lot more. My goal is at least 5 pages a week, if not more. There are so many critters I want to draw. I'm thinking of possibly offering some species study commissions after I clear my current queue. Not sure if anyone would be interested?

I need to resize the photos from the zoo so I can post some of them. Between Mbala and I, I think we got some really awesome shots!

I think the otter is beautiful!
Your sketches are awesome too. Someday when I have money I will have to ask for a commission.

Were these sketches from life, or from photos, or from TV, or from mind? In any case, awesome work. :)

D'oh. Late reply!
I have done a whole lot of life studies, especially when I was in college, but most of these came from various photographs. Some of them were from a documentary on lions I was watching on t.v. My goal is to get the shape, from all angles, so stuck in my head that I can do accurate poses from memory, and sketch fast and well in the field. I'll get to Africa, someday!

I love the way you use white for highlights instead of black for shadows on the otter piece. Very refreshing!

What do you use as reference for your sketches? Photos?

Thank you. :) I use sketches, photos, and t.v. programs for reference when I sketch, as well as life drawing when I can. I'd love to do more life drawing, but unfortunately we live hours from the zoo. So I have to make do with bothering my dogs and birds. :)

Great Scot! Those are good!
Agh! I love your lions! They look fantastic, you make me feel guilty about not drawing them. Fine, I'll start right now!
